Mr. Belotto's Amazing Race - by Eva Demsky

The Amazing Race Project in Mr. Belotto's Human Geography class required us to "travel" to 5 different countries in one week by researching them. Through our research, we planned activities, hotels, and plane flights. We presented the project with a blog that described our "experiences" in each country. However, our activities weren't allowed to be just tourist activities; we had to learn about the cultures of each place we visited. If you would like to "explore" the Blogs further:

High School Students Mentoring Lower School Science Students

Last week Rosenblatt High School kicked off a mentoring program that integrates lower, middle and high school students. The mentoring program will be in full swing next year after HS mentors are chosen through an application/ interview process. The mentors will lead activities including educational and social events creating a unified relationship between the older and younger students.  The lower grades can feel like they have older friends to look up to, and some day be just like them. Last week high school students went to the science lab to work with Ms. Gaines's third graders.  We were able to bond with the third graders as well as help them with their science projects. We also helped Ms. Golden's first grade class with their experiment. Today another group of high school students went to the first grade recess and led field games for them to play. These past two weeks were just the beginning of the lower, middle and high schoolers bonding and mentoringone another!

ADL Peer Training at Spady Elementary Montessori school - by Sydney Altschul and Joseph Zeuner

On Monday May 11th, No Place for Hate Peer Trainers Joseph Zeuner and Sydney Altschul, along with their club advisor, Ms. Amanda Brooke, conducted a peer training with a fourth grade class at SD Spady Elementary Montessori school in Delray Beach.  Students from Space of Mind Schoolhouse also conducted trainings in other classes.  The goal of the program was to teach students "How To Be an Ally" and how to put an end to bullying.  Through interactive activities the class full of 18 eager students learned important strategies for being an ally.

Following the training we, along with all the Spady 4th graders, had the privilege of listening to the inspirational words
of Hector Picard. Hector is a husband, dad, realtor, motivational speaker,
Ironman
triathlete,
and a double arm amputee. He left us with the message that you should not let your disabilities define who you are and anything is possible.

The No Place for Hate program is in its third year at DKJA
, we were recently honored to be recognized as a No Place for Hate school for the second consecutive year.
Trainings like the one held at Spady have been held in DKJA's 4th, 5th, and 7th grades this year. The program is led by the Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at DKJA's No Place for Hate/ADL Club. Next year, we are proud to invite all interested 9-12 grade high school students to participate in a three day training to become Certified ADL Peer Trainers.  In addition, next year we will plan to conduct more trainings in our middle and lower school classes.

Please take a moment to like the DKJA No Place for Hate/ADL club on Facebook.  For every "Like," one dollar is donated to the ADL Education program.  With over four hundred and fifty likes, it serves as a way to teach our local and international community the importance of ADL and the values it instills.  It allows us to post strategies about how to be an ally and how to combat bullying both in and out of school.

For more information about the program please email Ms. Amanda Brooke, Club Advisor.

NEPAL NEEDS OUR HELP! - by Maxwel & Daniela Supovitz

As Jews we are taught to do Mitzvot.  To take care of those in need.  With the devastation in Nepal, we feel strongly that this has enabled us to choose the right cause for our Mitzvah project.  We ask for the support of our community, to find it in your hearts to donate items such as blankets, tents, tarps, toiletries, baby formula and diapers, which are in desperate need, as most have lost their homes and everything in them.

Large collection boxes will be set up at the two main entrances on the first floor of the Donna Klein building.  Two additional boxes will be placed on the second floor, one at the top of the stairs and one in the hall by the middle school Principal's office.  There will also be one additional box at the entrance of the high school.

Collection dates will take place from Tuesday May 5 - Friday May 15th.

We can provide drop-off information for very large donations that can not be brought to the school,.

We would like to thank everyone in advance for making our Mitzvah project a blessing for those in need.

Sincerely,
Maxwel & Daniela Supovitz

DKJA LEGAL STUDIES PROGRAM - By Director of Legal Studies Caryn Siperstein Klein, Esq.

Donna Klein Jewish Academy is proud to offer our students with a highly competitive Legal Studies Program.  We provide special class offerings, which allow Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School students the opportunity to explore their interests in the field of law, afford students a chance to consider the legal profession, as well as provide students with a competitive advantage in any career path of their choosing. Moreover, the Legal Studies Program assists students overall with developing their analytical skills, communication tools, complex decision making, and handling future academic and work challenges.

Upon completion of any two Legal Studies Classes with an average score of an “A” and participation in an extracurricular law related team or club for two semesters, DKJA will award the student with a Certificate of Completion and Academic Excellence in the Legal Studies Program.

    Class Offerings

In the Spring of 2014, Donna Klein Jewish Academy offered “Introduction to Law”. The students studied Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Criminal and Civil Procedure, Evidence, Torts, Property and Contract Law. To supplement classroom learning and lectures, the students enjoyed wonderful guest speakers, which included: a Judge of Palm Beach Circuit Court, a Judge of Palm Beach County Court,  Counsel for the Palm Beach County Courthouse, Speaker from the Palm Beach County Appraiser’s Office, Speakers from the  Palm Beach Clerk and Comptroller’s Office, Deputies from Palm Beach County Sheriff Department, an Assistant Prosecutor of Broward County, an Assistant Public Defender of Palm Beach County and the Palm Beach County State Attorney. The students also took a trip to the South County Courthouse, in Delray Beach, where they heard from three different Judges and watched multiple legal proceedings, which included Family and Probate matters as well as traffic infractions.  The students had an opportunity to observe and learn in live courtrooms.

In the Fall of 2014, DKJA offered "Law and Mock Trial".  This class will continued to have a plethora of pertinent guest speakers with a focus on both civil and criminal trials. The students learned both criminal and civil court procedure as well as the accompanying rules of evidence. The class reviewed and analyzed a case study provided by FLREA, Florida Law Related Education Association, which is partially funded by the Florida Bar Association. A new case study is provided yearly by FLREA for the Florida High School Mock Trial Competition in which DKJA competes.

In the Spring 2015,  DKJA offered “Business Law”, which provided an overview of the variety of fields within the Legal Profession. Areas of Law included: Business and Corporate Law as well as  Intellectual Property- Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law. Students learned what attorneys accomplish on a day to day basis with a variety of guest speakers. Students were able to create their own Businesses and accompanying Legal Documents, which included Contracts, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.

    Extracurriculars

    Mock Trial Team
The  students  have the option of participating in this academic competition in which a team of 6-8 students role play attorneys and witnesses in a fictional trial. The competition is typically held during the first week of February. Students  have a chance to compete against other school teams in their judicial circuit, and the winner goes to the state competition. Study aids will be provided which include case materials, questions, answers, and notes.

    Moot Court Team
This team will file an appeal from a trial court to an appellate court, which involves two components: a written brief to the Supreme Court of Florida and an oral argumentThe top brief writers in each Appellate District will have the opportunity to present oral arguments in District Court of Appeal competitions.
