The students were surprised and their questions came immediately: “How come? If we learned the Torah commands us to love God, our neighbor, and the stranger, why doesn’t the Torah command us to love our parents and just honor them?” After everybody presented their point of view, argued, agreed and disagreed and finally understood the concept, they came to the conclusion: that as </span><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">from the Torah’s perspective whether or not we </span><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">love</span><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> our parents is irrelevant; what matters is that we show them honor and reverence.</span></div>

Some students voiced their opinion, agreeing parents have to be respected and honored, some said they love their parents so much more than just respect them, but mostly they would only show reverence to God. </span></div>

The students shared beautiful examples on how they love and honor their parents. </span></div>

They knew of their oppression, of their struggles, of God’s miracles and of their deliverance. Heavily impacted by their past, God decided that their descendants would be the people to enter the promised land. And so, deeply connected to the experiences of the ancestors, not far removed from the moments of the Exodus, they entered the land of Israel to start a new life for the Jewish people. To this day, we honor the moment of our redemption and its influence on the future of Judaism, every time we recite kiddush and sanctify our holy days:</span></span></div>

But our rabbis knew that our Torah, our values, our mitzvot could not be extinguished. Rabbis escaped to Yavneh and built batei midrash - study halls - to continue the teaching of Torah. Not long after, Torah academies were established in Sura and Pumbedita, and by the time the Jews established communities in Italy, Germany and France in the early middle ages, our rabbis had already produced the Mishna, the Talmud, Midrashim, Commentaries, the beginning of Jewish law codes and more. </span></span></div>

<b>Rabbi David Paskin<span style="font-size: large;"><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="normal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="normal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="normal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="normal">
In Numbers 3:15-16 we read, “And HASHEM spoke unto Moses in the
wilderness of Sinai, saying: ‘Number the children of Levi by their fathers’
houses, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall
number them.’ And Moses numbered them according to the word of the HASHEM, as
he was commanded.”</div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
Rashi wonders aloud what the Torah means when it says,
“according to the word of HASHEM”. Wouldn’t it have been enough to say Moses
counted the children “as he was commanded”? Why the extra phrase?</div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
In answer to his own question, Rashi imagines a conversation
between Moses and God. Upon being commanded to count the children Moses argued,
“How can I enter their tents to count? Isn’t that a violation of their
privacy?” God responds, “okay, tell you what - you go around to each tent,
stand outside and a voice from heaven will tell you how many children are in
that tent.” To which Moses replies, “If you are going to tell me how many
children are inside then why do I have to shlep around to stand outside of each
tent?! Just tell me now and save me the trouble.” God answers, “You do your
part and I’ll do mine.”</div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
Throughout the Torah, God relies upon us to be partners in
creating the world we seek. God commands Noah to build an Ark to save his
family and the creatures of the earth from the impending flood; God challenges
Abraham and Sarah to leave everything behind, journey to a new land and become
the parents of a new nation; God calls Moses and Aaron to return to Egypt and
serve as God’s voice to free that nation and guide them to God’s mountain; and
God calls on Moses to do his part by going to each tent, standing outside, and
listening for God’s voice.</div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
Like Moses at the Sea of Reeds we very often beg for God’s
intervention forgetting that God will do God’s part if only we would do ours.
The midrash teaches this when it suggests that it was not Moses who brought
about the parting of the sea, but Nachshon ben Aminadav who was brave enough to
walk into the waters and risk drowning all because he understood that it is not
enough to have faith in God - we must also have faith in ourselves. We must see
our own capacity to part the waters of injustice, battle the forces of evil and
to repair the world. </div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<div class="normal">
There are indeed times when it would seem easier to just wait
for God to tell us how many children are in each tent. It may be more
convenient to wait for God’s “justice to well up as waters, and (God’s)
righteousness as a mighty stream.” (Amos 5:24) But as Father Mulcahy from
M*A*S*H taught us, “A faith of convenience is a hollow faith.”</div>
<div class="normal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="normal">
We are not a people convenience but a people of commandment.
God commands us to do our part. Only when we heed this call will every person
in our world be counted, respected and loved.</div>

High school students and Hebrew Honors Society members - Olivia Galel, Rebecca Wirtschafter, Jessica Siegel, Eden Leder,and freshmen - Rennie Alvarez, Danielle Chaham, and Shaina Goodis, along with their teachers Morah Eilat Asseo and Ms. Lauren Jordan, were privileged to join members of JARC (Jewish Association for Residential Care) and interact with them by taking part in a variety of activities. The students helped the residents decorate baseball caps with the colors of the Israeli flag, as well as teach and lead them in singing the song “Am Yisrael Chai.” It was a great experience as we all sang, danced and waved our flags in sharing our pride of Israel on her 69th birthday. </span></div>

This week we marked Yom Hazikaron- Israel's Memorial day and Yom Ha'atzmaut Israel's independence day. The juxtaposition of these two days was very poignant as always. We had a very moving assembly for the memorial day attended by several parents who lost relatives in the struggle for Israel. On Yom Ha'atzmaut we enjoyed the many celebrations put together by the middle school. Check out the school social media for amazing picture from the various events. At the beginning of our tour in Israel we visited a stone monument that was created by Israeli national artist Natan Rapaport. It is perhaps his life’s masterpiece. Connecting the world of the Shoah with the birth of Israel, the “Scrolls of Fire” are inscribed on the inside of the stone monument with the haunting words of the Prophet Ezekial (37:17) “I will put My spirit in you, and you will live, and I will place you in your own land and you will know that I am Hashem, I spoke and I did, thus says Hashem.” A chilling prophecy that describes the dry bones coming back to life and returning to the Land of Israel, clarity for many that the miracle of Israel is part of a greater redemptive process that began with the Shoah. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
For me, the symbol of this March of the Living has been stones. The stones that we have placed on the gravestones of our ancestors, the monuments made of stone, and the stones of Jerusalem and the Western Wall. The Hebrew word for stone is “aven” – <span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL" lang="HE"><span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL"></span>(אבן) </span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> a conjunction of av (father) and ben (son). <span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL" lang="HE"><span dir="RTL"></span><span dir="RTL"></span>(אבן = אב + בן) </span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span>. It is an expression of the enduring strength of the relationship of children and parents from generation to generation. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
The relationship between a father and son, mother and daughter, parent to child, is truly the foundation ‘stones’ of our people. The Kotel, the Western Wall, stands as a symbol of that relationship. From generation to generation the Jewish people, have prayed facing Jerusalem, longed to return to Jerusalem and hoped for its rebuilding, declaring with their children at the Passover seder table, “next year in Jerusalem.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Our experience these past weeks has given all of us clarity that we are bearing witness to the miraculous fulfillment of the prophecy of our Jewish bible and the faithful hope of Jewish mothers and fathers throughout the ages, for a return to our eternal homeland, the Land of Israel. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
We began our trip at the Radagast Station train platform, where families were torn apart from each other before they were sent in cattle cars to Aushwitz, Belzec and Treblinka. Juxtaposed to this, we are finishing our trip celebrating Shabbat and Yom Haatzmaot, clinging to our children, dancing and singing with families from around the world.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Last night, we had the privilege to commemorate Yom Hazikaron at an orphanage called Bet Elizarki, in Netanya. The children living in the home are without “mom and dad” but they are parented in a loving and nurturing home throughout their lives. We learned the difference between being a mother or father and being a parent. The Rabbi that cares for the children explained that being a parent is about nurturing and caring for the child financially, emotionally through all of life’s milestones. Some mothers and fathers are unable to parent their children and therefore this home was created to give those children everything needed to end the cycle of abandonment. Anyone can be a mother or father, but being a parent is someone that continually cares and nurtures, creating an enduring relationship that helps the child be the best of themselves. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
This March of the Living has given birth to a new pride in Israel and in our Jewish identity. The students are so proud to be in our homeland, grateful for this incredible experience and have learned so many lessons about our people, and our core Jewish values. We will all return with greater enthusiasm but for how long will it last? This is an experience that needs to be nurtured, cared for, and encouraged to continue to grow. This journey which we have embarked on is really just the beginning of a new found appreciation for who we are and where we come from, giving us greater clarity on where we should be going. </div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">This week in Mr. De Landsheer's Honors Chemistry class, students are exploring the concepts of thermodynamics and energy change as it relates to molecular systems, as well as the world at large (i.e. industry, nuclear power, biological systems, etc.). Students pursue scientific inquiry in order to make tangible connections, such as the role of energy use as it pertains to global warming. With a growing scientific foundation, Mr. De Landsheer hopes his students will take a proactive role in helping to mitigate the human impact on the planet as well as spread awareness as to the innate value of scientific exploration.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Today, we visited the concentration/death camp of Majdanek. Tears ran down my face as we saw the barracks, gas chambers execution pits, and the crematoriums.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">While hearing the story of children digging to hide their most treasured possessions so that the Nazis would not strip it away from them, I clinched onto my necklace which holds the Chai given to me at birth and the Magen David given to me when I turned 18. This has always been my beloved item and an object that encapsulates the sum of my Jewish passions, but now this chain means so much more. What I wear around my neck is a symbol of the Jewish collective experience. The same collective experience that gave my grandmother and grandfather the hope to survive as well as for many other Jews.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">After seeing the crematorium and saying the mourner's Kaddish, I cried. I then emotionally collapsed when I saw the pile of ashes of my ancestors, but I am grateful to have my fall suspended by the hands of those around me, the strangers and friends who have now become family. I now truly understand what Jewish oneness and mishpacha means.</span></div>

During the interview, Kuba shared with us the story of him and his wife Hela who were saved by the righteous gentile Oskar Shindler. From the ghetto wall we proceeded to Shindler's factory. We stood outside the factory and learned more about the great doings of Oscar Shindler. On the walls, many of the Shindler survivors were pictured. Jack pointed out Kuba's picture to me. It was amazing to see my interview with Kuba in 8th grade connect so intricately with my experiences here in Poland.</span></span></div>

"GOOD SHABBOS!! </div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Last night, we began our first March of the Living Shabbat by walking through the streets of Krakow to a Jewish museum where we held our beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat service. The service was led by Rabbi Plotkin and Rabbi Brodie who both encouraged great amounts of student involvement. We shared stories, sang songs, danced, and overall had an incredible experience. The ruach (spirit) was so evident among the entire region, it was truly palpable. </div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Following the service, we walked to dinner which was shared with a number of other regions on the march, including: Switzerland, Dallas, Miami-Dade, and BBYO. Throughout the night we continued to sing and dance with both our new friends and old friends, even though after seeing Auschwitz-Birkenau together, we all feel like family. </div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
This morning we had a number of different options for Tefilah that we could choose from. Of those options, there was one that involved traveling to the nearby Polish synagogue where services were being held for members of the community. About 25 students went with Rabbi Plotkin and Rabbi Broide to Isaac Synagogue, the Chabad of Krakow. Isaac Synagogue is a surviving synagogue from the Holocaust, with faded writing on the wall. We learned that the writings were actually the Tefilah prayers that the people used because they didn't all have siddurim, that we are so blessed to have today. </div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
The rest of the day consisted of our walking all around the old city of Krakow. We saw the remnants of the Krakow ghetto, seeing Schindler's factory, and then visited the Jewish quarter. All in all, it was an inspiring day. We got to feel what life was like in Krakow before and during the war. Seeing these sites in Krakow showed us how these innocent people, who were ripped from their familiar surroundings, separated from their loved ones, and systematically murdered, were real people. It personalized everything we've learned thus far about the Holocaust. This opportunity has made us feel proud of our heritage and has given us even more of a responsibility to ensure that we, and all of the world, never forget."</div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;">After a fun flight getting to know each other, we landed in Warsaw, then gathered into our various bus groups (red, blue, green and purple) and drove to Lodz the second largest Jewish community in Poland on the eve of the war.</span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"> </span></span><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;">We began at the Radegast Station “umschlagplatz” (deportation station) where the Jews of the Lodz Ghetto were liquidated.</span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"> </span></span><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;">As we stood at the station, the very place that families were separated from each other, I along with many other chaperones clutched our own children, as our Survivors Rosette Goldstein and Sam Ron shared their families stories and we heard testimonies from students who shared the stories of their families.</span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"> </span></span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"> </span></span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Using a little technological ingenuity, Ms. Restivo’s 9th grade honors class was treated to a “fireside” reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.” Via the classroom's Smartboard, students experienced the crackle of the fire and the glowing embers of the flames: a perfect setting for reading Poe and learning about the Dark Romanticism and Gothic genres. Featured in the picture is freshman Sam Bernstein, who tried his hand at doing a dramatic reading of the story - with a little coaching from Ms. Restivo. </span><br />

The Eagles and Lady Eagles Tennis Teams are primed for the district playoffs that will be taking place the week of April 3rd. Both teams got off to great starts to the season but due to injuries, illness, trips, and tests, both teams struggled down the stretch. #1 singles players Chad Friedman and Jessica Siegel only lost one singles match each the entire season and are both highly seeded for the district playoffs. Other singles qualifiers are: Moshe Gad, Ashley Klein, Chase Moed, Eden Leder, Aaron Brenner, Talya Kadish, Ben Zeuner and Elanit Berkower. Good luck to them all!</div>

This year, 14 students along with two chaperones joined the more than 18,000 people from around the country for a bipartisan conference in order to strengthen, protect and promote the U.S. - Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel. Our Rosenblatt High School at DKJA students get leadership skills and are empowered to be active participants while they are here in Rosenblatt High School at DKJA, but they are also prepared for activism on their respective college campuses. </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">My AIPAC Experience</span></div>
<br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span><span style="font-family: arial; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">When attending my first ever Policy Conference, I had no idea what to expect. After months of meetings and guest speakers I understood the purpose of AIPAC, but not necessarily how this convention would be run. Living in South Florida for my entire life I never encountered public anti-semitism or met with people who were anti-Israel. Stepping out of my cab, I was completely shocked with what I was witnessing. There was a huge group of Palestinian protesters blocking the entrance to the convention center. At that specific moment I didn’t know what to feel, whether I was to be angry that there were people who believe Israel to be a bad place or excited to actually be witnessing democracy in action where people can voice their own opinions and beliefs. All I knew was that this is the reason why I attended AIPAC. I wanted and needed to ensure that the relationship between the U.S. and Israel stay intact and flourish. AIPAC was an experience that taught me about the importance of standing up for what I believe in and gave me the tools to support the country I love so dearly, Israel. </span><br />

Issues discussed included security-related matters, maps, peace accords and items related to Northern Israel, the Gaza Strip and the different meanings behind the terms West Bank/Occupied Territories/Judea and Samaria. They are quick on their Chromebooks, adept at Google Classroom, and creative in their use of digital projects.</span></div>

On Thursday, February 23, DKJA engaged in Digital Learning Day, a day of learning through technology. The teachers engaged their students through dynamic lessons across all subject areas; lessons included learning through the online education resource Kahn Academy, classroom discussions entirely through shared Google Docs, game challenges using Quizlet and Kahoot!, video creation, and webquests to explore the students’ b’nai mitzvah parshas. </span></div>

Several classes make use of technological skills to better interact with the students, and some of them, like electives “Digital Graphic Design” and “Electrical Engineering and Microprocessors,” focus on it. Most recently, the Digital Graphic Design students used Photoshop to redesign their school athletic uniforms, and currently they are in the process of creating animated GIFs, which are short stop-motion films combining photography with digital art.</span><br />
